We had a fantastic meeting last night. The SWIBM committee started the year off with a lot of excitement, some opportunities for funding, and a very successful demonstration of a design for flags throughout the town. Pat has very enthusiastically sourced some hot air balloon material from the Wiltshire Scrapstore and fashioned some designs for flags out of them. The idea is to get businesses throughout town to sponsor a flag, which will be hung on a pole outside their premises for a few weeks in the summer. Paul from Melksham Christmas Lights has investigated the flagpole posts that already exist around Melksham and advised on sizes and placings. We were all very impressed with Pat's progress, and Terri and Kathy will go round the shops next month to see who would be interested in taking part. This will be a great project that makes Melksham look great in the summer, celebrates the businesses and groups in town, and is fabulously eco-friendly in that all materials will be recycled from the Scrapstore.

TWENTY FIVE people showed up for today's Tidy Town Day! This is a fantastic turn out for the start of the year and we hope it continues like this!
We nearly ran out of litter picking equipment! Terri took a group of especially keen people to Devonshire Close to tackle a particularly tricky area, and Carl and Lesley stuck the sponsorship signs on the new planters by Cooper Tires. Everyone else - including three generations of the Sampson family - set off around the town to gather every single crisp packet and cigarette butt in sight. The new Melksham Community Vouchers were especially appreciated, with everyone receiving two vouchers for the two hours they spent cleaning the town. These can be spent at the Melksham cinema and we understand there is a group trip to see Bridget Jones' Baby next Friday. Thank you everyone for a great turn out. See you next month! |
