Brilliant job done by everybody who helped out at Town Tidy today, the town was littered with confetti which kept blowing everywhere with the hefty breeze. But we managed to clear both sides Market Place to Town Bridge and back.

SW in Bloom Melksham - Wiltshire College Lackham Student Award 2019
Over the past four years or so the Foundation Studies and Horticultural students/learners (and staff) from Wiltshire College Lackham have been very helpful to the town, assisting with various environmental enhancement projects as part of their studies and requirement for work experience, including;
In early 2018 it was proposed that the SW in Bloom Group support an award for a Foundation Studies student in order to show our appreciation of the efforts of the learners. Unanimous support was given and subsequently Ian Revill (Assistant Principal Lackham) was approached and was happy to support and accept such a concept. It was agreed that the award criteria would be; An award to a Foundation Studies student who attends the Lackham campus. The award is for the student, who in the eyes of the teaching team has;
The recipient to receive a £25 voucher along with a framed certificate of merit. The 2019 Award The teaching team at the College, for academic year 2018/19, selected Christopher Wiltshire as the second recipient of the award. The Award was subsequently presented at the Annual Awards Ceremony held at Wiltshire College Lackham on Friday 28th June, being presented by Kathy Iles (Chair of SWIB Melksham and Town Councillor) and Carl Gill (Bloom volunteer and former Head of Horticultures, Floristry and Foundation Studies at Lackham). Chris was part of the group who played a pivotal role in refurbishing the Friends Garden. Citation “Chris has made the most progress in the academic year. He joined late to the group but soon gelled with everyone. He has shown his skills whilst working in practical sessions and has made huge improvements in his written work. Passing his English was a real success for him. Chris definitely has a true love of the countryside and all that goes with it. During the work we have been doing with Melksham in Bloom he has out shone everyone with his enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. On practical’s he puts 110% in every session and has shown a respect for the farm staff and the whole environment. Chris has had a positive impact on the tutor group. He has shown he can be a leader and is liked by everyone in his tutor group. He is respectful to staff and is always on time for all sessions.” Every time I walk round there, the flowers look more gorgeous. Will done MTC for making the flower beds look so good. Spot the lone poppy in one photograph..
Bloomers had done a brilliant job again this afternoon putting up the incredible flags made by Terri Welch and her flag making team. By time I left work they were putting up the last flag.
Kathy, Ruth and Vanessa completed painting the phone and post box yesterday evening, absolutely brilliant job. Bloomer Ruth seems to have been up at an ungodly hour this morning painting lamp posts - super woman.
The Friends Garden was officially opened by Cllr Mayor Jon Hubbard, with Melksham Bloomers and those who have worked so hard on the garden and invited guest. It will be open to the public from 6th July.
Kathy Iles "I can’t put into words how proud I am to be part of such a wonderful team of volunteers. A couple of years ago, this garden at the back of the old Quaker/Spiritualist Church in the town centre was lost and was completely thick with 6ft high brambles. But, with a few financial backers and an awful lot of volunteer hours it has been sympathetically transformed into a beautiful memorial garden suited to quiet contemplation. It is a burial ground of the town’s Quakers, so I really hope, when it’s open to the public from July that people do treat it with the greatest respect. Thank you to everyone involved" Kathy, Ruth and Vanessa enjoyed a well earned Pimms, kindly supplied by Ben and Jeff. Doing a fantastic job.
Bloomers Kathy, Ruth and Vanessa make a start repainting the Market Place Phone Box and Post Box (paint kit supplied by BT) fabulous job, great photos form Liz Turner
Quite a lot of tidying up going on around the grounds, as well as windows and doors being boarded up. Walking round quite a few different flowers about, but sad to she the fig tree cut down - it was one of the few remaining plants left from the days when it had fantastic gardens and mostly likely planted by my great grandfather who had been the head gardener.
