More play areas to be refurbished by town council RIVERSIDE Drive is the latest play area to be refurbished by Melksham Town Council as part of its ongoing improvements to amenities and facilities within the town. The town council is ensuring that Wiltshire Council-owned and operated play areas in the town are not closed. Riverside Drive joins Primrose Drive and King George V Park where town council investment this year has served to ensure that remedial works are undertaken to ensure that play equipment in the town remains available for the community to enjoy. “It was made very clear to us that the surfaces on which the play equipment at Riverside Drive is located was in an unsafe condition and that closure of this play area was imminent,” explained Mayor of Melksham, Cllr Adrienne Westbrook. “The town council is determined to keep play areas open and available for the community to enjoy and therefore committed the necessary funds to carry out remedial repairs to the surface areas. “We are keen to avoid any repetition of the situation earlier this year where Wiltshire Council took the decision to close the play area at Primrose Drive, which was only reopened following town council intervention to fund the necessary repairs. “We understand that Wiltshire Council is facing enormous financial pressures at the current time, and the town council is determined to proactively ensure that play areas in Melksham remain open and in a safe condition. We are therefore in the process of discussing the transfer of responsibility for play areas to the town council in order that we can progress a programme of repairs to ensure that remedial works are undertaken to bring the play areas up to a safe standard. “However, it is already apparent that the scale of the task is much, much more challenging than first anticipated and that significant investment will be required to undertake the necessary repairs to play areas within the town and that this will only be achieved on a phased basis. Nevertheless the town council remains committed to bringing play areas up to a safe standard and our ultimate goal is to refurbish and enhance the play equipment and facilities on offer, such that children and families have improved social and recreational facilities to enjoy. “By 2019, for example, we are determined to install a splash pad within King George V Park to reintroduce a wet play facility for children following the closure of the much-loved and well-used paddling pool two years ago. “These are challenging but exciting times and the town council is totally committed to exploring ways by which services for our community can be delivered and enhanced. Indeed, we’d be delighted to hear from individuals, families, children and community groups with any ideas or suggestions on how to improve the play areas within the town.” melkshamnews.com/2017/11/08/tidy-town-project-woody-a-big-success/
Tidy Town – Project Woody a big success A BRILLIANT day with beautiful autumn weather allowed 15 volunteers aged between 8-70 to get Woody Park on Queensway back to a useable condition. The Project Woody was part of the Tidy Town day. The Tidy Town group reports, “On Sunday 5th November, residents volunteered their time to cut back overgrowth, trees and tidy up the children’s play equipment to encourage young children to use the park again. It had come to people’s attention that the park was not being used for the purpose it was created for. “The volunteers were also joined by two tree experts who with their expert knowledge, were able to cut and trim down the undergrowth and remove huge amounts of branches. Wiltshire Council has agreed to take away branches that have been cut down. “The children’s play equipment, now it is visible and not hidden under the overgrown and neglected trees and grass, is being treated with wood preserve, putting life back into them. The chicken and the tortoise have been cleaned, really making the place look usable again. The parrot is yet to receive some needed TLC, but will do in the near future. “We are still discussing uses for the parrot and how it can be saved, as a new one would cost in excess of £20,000 and therefore a solution is needed. “Mayor cllr Adrienne Westbrook, who was there on the day, suggests help from the teenage population of Melksham putting forward the idea that a graffiti mural is created to revitalise the park. This is in its very early idea stage, but we welcome alternative ideas. “The Town Tidy project continues with more wood preserving and finishing touches to bring the park back to life and to encourage younger children to use it.” The mayor said, “It’s a shame that younger children cannot use it as the older teenagers are misusing it. “We are really pleased with the work we did on the day, spending just one and a half hours of our alloted two and a half hours. It just shows what people can do if you do it all together.”
It was great to see so many people at tonight's SWIM Melksham AGM, which was held at the Town Hall. Kathy presented the IYN (It's Your Neighbourhood) certificates to:
Denise James, secretary of the South West in Bloom, gave a very interesting and informative talk about what we had achieved this year and many new and interesting idea's for going foward.
Kathy Iles remains as Chair, Clare as Secretary, Mick Company has taken over as treasurer and myself as Vice Chair - Linda De Santiz. Look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting, which is on December 6th at the Assembly Hall, 6:30pm. Big challenge ahead for 2018! SWIB - Chairs report for 2017 AGM
Thank you everyone for coming to the AGM, it was lovely to see you and to know we do have some supporters. We had a very interesting year, with a couple of small challenges. The Market Place redevelopment took far longer than we all expected, and then we had the cutting down of the trees the day before our judging which was a little distressing and ended up with us on Radio 2 talking to Jeremy Vine! But luckily, we were not actually judged on any of that and in hindsight I think it actually gained us a few points as the judges were impressed at our resilience and enthusiasm regardless. We had wonderful flowers again from Old Milestone Nursery, and thank you to Mike and Nigel for planting and looking after them and for all their hard work throughout the year in and around the town. I'll take this opportunity to welcome our new Town Warden David Elms too. Thank you also to students from Lackham for topping us up at the last minute with extra plants and to Bloom members for planting them. The Library beds had a makeover by Bloom members this year, lots of old and dead wood and weeds taken out and new shrubs planted, they are looking so much better, so thank you for that. The Prince of Wales garden was given a good tidy, some fresh shrubs planted and Nigel repaired the seat round the tree. The War memorial had some maintenance done on the back wall with fresh compost being added in, there are more plans afoot for this for next year. We started a great flag making project and managed to produce about 20 flags that were hung in the town centre. Thank you to everyone that took part in that and we hope to continue this for next year too. The judges were particularly impressed with these and that we had used them in places that were not suitable for hanging baskets so they had filled some empty spaces that were crying out for some colour. Town Tidy days have been held on the first Sunday of every month all year and I'd like to thank the volunteers that have given their time and energy to help keep the Town and close surrounding areas looking good. We were very honoured that the BBC chose Melksham to feature in a new documentary about Britain in Bloom towns called 'Blooming Marvellous' which will be on your TVs in the spring. Several filming sessions took place which were fun but very hard work. Thank you to everyone who helped and participated in any part of that. The weather leading up to judging day in July was unbelievably hot .. and almost unbearable on judging day. Thank you very much to everyone who braved that with us. And a huge thank you to Clare for being thrown in at the deep end taking over from Miriam as our secretary in April and pulling together a great portfolio for us. Thank you everyone, without you all, we could not have achieved the GOLD! - Kathy Iles Tonight at Melksham Town Hall at 7:00pm. Come and help celebrate Melksham's Gold Award and the achieving IYN's as well. Be part of the team for next year, everyone welcome...
Massive thank you to everybody who turned up for today's special tidy town day. On this gloriously sunny Sunday a lot was achieved - tree's pruned, overgrown bushes cut back, litter picked and some of the play equipment was cleaned, sanded and painted. A really great start for Project 'Woody" in a sadly neglected area of Melksham.
Whilst a lot of plants are now starting to look sad with the change in weather, the flower beds in this garden still looking colourful...
